SYNOPSIS

In 1949, Pete Seeger’s song If I Had a Hammer summoned us to repurpose everyday work tools into tools for social justice. That call still resonates today. You Have a Hammer: Building Grant Proposals for Social Change urges you to build proposals from a perspective of activism, transforming the work from the mundane pursuit of dollars to the life-altering pursuit of lasting change. It’s not about how to write grant proposals. It’s about how to use grantseeking as a tool for building a better world.

“Raising money for social change is more important than ever... But even the most passionate advocates won’t find the funds needed to drive impact without first understanding grants as tools for pursuit of the common good. This book is a great place to start.”

David Callahan, Founder & Editor of Inside Philanthropy and author of The Givers

“Ask yourself this: If a funding source is given a choice between paying for the work you do or buying the good you achieve, which would they choose? A guide to creating social change, You Have a Hammer captures the imperative of focusing on why we do what we do, who we're doing it for and how we work with others. If you don't already think this way, you should. If you do think this way, you'll appreciate having it carefully laid out in a way you can easily share with others. I lose track of the number of times I wish I could just read the essence of what is important, and Barbara has done it here. If your ultimate goal is to create change, it's a short and mighty read.”

Eddie Gale, Program Director , A.D. Henderson Foundation
