Get to Know Rootstock Publisher on Banter & Beans

Samantha Kolber, owner and publisher of Rootstock Publishing, recently chatted with Pat McDonald, co-host of Banter & Beans. Kolber, a poet and former publications manager of Goddard College, began working with Rootstock in 2019 and purchased the independent press two years ago. Since then, she has increased the publication list from 11 titles in 2022 to 18 titles in 2024!

The wide-ranging conversation covers Kolber’s experience and Rootstock’s relationship with its authors. She’s looking for authors with an authentic voice and a satisfying story arc. “It has to be a good story that I want to read for me to want to publish it,” says Kolber, who noted that about 50 percent of the company’s books have won indie book awards.
